The problem is that many "Verified Purchasers" do write fake reviews and I have seen 1,000's of them. Bezos decries paid writers for awhile and then they are lost in time. Every time anyone reads a fake review and then decides to make a purchase, it is money in Bezos pocket so what is the incentive for him to stop the practice?
And you are kinda right, they can be sorted out but it takes hours & hours to do it and the supposed beauty of Amazon is how quickly you can make a transaction.

I am a big Amazon purchaser. I have also read a lot of reviews. One of the logical comments to your concern could be, look for the verified purchasers. Unfortunately, if the seller is paying for fake 5-star reviews, they can "sell" to these reviewers, in a transaction where no money is exchanged, and then the fake review will end up as a verified purchaser review. The fake reviews can be sorted out, but it takes extra effort, checking each reviewer, and most people aren't aware of this situation, accepting the reviews at face value.

An open comment to Jeff Bezos and I also emailed him jeff@amazon.com

I have worked on three angles regarding Amazon for the last 6 months. I was particularly focused on one dishonest company and became interested in how they manipulated the Amazon Review System in three ways and why Amazon allows it to continue.

1.) Paying people for Fake 5 Star Reviews Anatomy Of An Amazon Sponsored Fake Reviewer https://low-carb-scams.com/anat...

2.) Deleting (Hiding) reviews Amazon Reviews Being Deleted Hidden And Faked https://low-carb-scams.com/cons...

3.) Inserting notes soliciting a 5 Star Review for free products Julian Bakery Is Breaking Amazon Sellers Policies https://low-carb-scams.com/juli...

I have filed 2 extensive reports with Amazon to no avail. There is far too much money at stake for Jeff Bezos to stop this practice. Jeff gives pithy lip service and then it is back to business as usual. It is estimated that 30% of internet reviews are Fake and if this is true we definitely have (another) broken system once again showing that greed knows no bounds.

It is my opinion that if Amazon made examples of companies who are gaming the system by deleting their accounts and barring them from selling through Amazon it would go a long way in curbing all of this.

This problem literally affects people worldwide. Perhaps we might be a bit more savvy than the average country (and I doubt it) but people continue to purchase through Amazon because of the reviews; fake or not.
